MONUMENTAL TOURNAMENT OF ACES 2012 “FIVE FOR 5”
Saturday, October 6 was indeed a monumental day as the 5th annual Monumental Tournament of Aces was played under picture perfect conditions at The Links of Gleneagles in Cochrane. Over 170 golfers plus 40 more friends joined with our amazing volunteer committee to raise over $90,000.00 for our “Five for 5” charities – Cochrane FCSS, Cochrane Victim Services, Cochrane Activettes, Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane, and Boma la Mama Safe Birthing Centre & School of Midwifery. It was not only a record breaking fundraising day but also on the golf course as 3 aces were recorded – Phil Westerson, Chris Cozac, and Bonnie Love (hitting husband George’s ball on the “switch ball” hole). A live auction hosted by Cochrane’s own Stu Bradley raised over $30,000.00 and the silent auction brought in another $14,000.00! Incredible sponsorship from our Platinum, Monumental, and Hole sponsors broke all previous records and nearly $10,000.00 in donations from golfers who paid but could not play, family, and friends also contributed greatly to the final tally. But the tournament is so much more than fundraising and you could feel the atmosphere of caring, support, and remembrance throughout the day. A very moving presentation from Boma la Mama founders Leesha and Lawrence Mafuru brought many in the crowd to tears and we are proud to give their dream a boost as they work to build a birthing centre and school of midwifery in Arusha, Tanzania. The Reg Sherren CBC video “Something is Missing” first aired on CBC National News and Hockey Day in Canada paid tribute to our beautiful Lindsay. The crowd came to it’s feet as Kimmett Cup co-chairs Joe MacLellan, Jason Baserman, and Reid Kimmett presented honorary KC jersey to Rusty and Beeps Poffenroth. MTA co-chairs Mike Borody and Taylor Kimmett along with their committee and volunteers are to be congratulated for another fantastic day on the links and a fitting tribute for Lindsay. We all miss her so much.
The “Five for 5″ Monumental Tournament of Aces was a tremendous success for the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Foundation, held at the Links of GlenEagles Oct. 6. It raised money for five local charities. So far, the tally is running more than $90,000 for the charities; with $14,000 a piece plus an additional $20,000 for the Boma la Mama charity. It was a record-breaking day in terms of golfers (171), sponsorships, donations, auctions and total money raised — but also on the golf course,” said Kelly Kimmett, adding that the atmosphere was lively and spirited. “We really noticed the atmosphere during the banquet and auction was electric, with so many people rallying behind the causes, especially after Leesha and Lawrence presented the Boma la Mama project.” The annual fundraiser has already surpassed the goal of $75,000; last year’s tourney raised $85,000 for the LINDSAY Project at the University of Calgary School of Medicine.

Last year’s event was truly memorable in our second year at Gleneagles with a record number of golfers and another hole in one bringing the total to 8 in 3 years! $100,000 was raised to fund a special project that would be very dear to Lindsay’s heart – a 3-dimensional, interactive computer model of anatomy and physiology used in the education of medical students being developed by the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Computer Science. The LINDSAY Virtual Human Project is dedicated to Dr. Lindsay Kimmett and will revolutionize the way students are educated leading to better doctors and better outcomes for patients. This year’s tournament is the fifth edition and our theme of “Five For 5” will see us raising funds to support five very deserving charities in our world and Africa. Beneficiaries this year are the Cochrane Activettes, Family Community Support Services, Victim Services, The Boys & Girls Club, and Boma la Moma a birthing centre project near Arusha, Tanzania where Lindsay did some medical school electives in 2007 before climbing Mt.
